A little bit about me
I love exploring life's moments and capturing them on camera. Big ones like the birth of a child, simple ones like a family outing or a spontaneous embrace. Years later, when we look back and relive them, it's as if no time has passed at all. Like magic...
...I'm inspired by that magic. A romantic nostalgic at heart, I enjoy whiling away the hours flipping through old family photo albums. It transports me to the past, full of awe and wonder. It's why I love capturing today's memories and preserving them for the future.
Though photography began as a hobby for me when I was just a teenager, it soon became a creative outlet, a way for me to tell stories. My urge to document the world grew as I did, reignited by the birth of my own baby five years ago.
I wanted to hold on to every second of this new life unfolding before me. Initially, it was all about firsts: first smiles, first steps, first holidays - until I realised there was magic in everyday moments, too.
Since starting Jess Morgan Photography, I have photographed hundreds of babies and families from all over the world. My work has been featured on magazine covers and I've had the pleasure of working with incredible brands including:
Great Ormond Street Hospital
Persil Non-Bio & Comfort Pure
I am a Member of the British Association of Professional Child Photographers and have contributed to the internationally selling photography book, How to Photograph Your Kids Like a Pro by Heather Mosher.
"I believe in surprises, in little messes, in moments when kids think no one is looking"
I'm inspired by the simple sweetness of the everyday, the stories of families being themselves. I love using natural light because of its beautiful, soft quality, and how it changes over time. In the autumn, when the sun is low in the sky, it creates a hazy, ethereal effect. Summers are for crisp, bright smiles and winter has a calm, white purity to it. With spring comes a joyful relief, a soaking in of warmth and light. I work with these colours, or the lack of them, to capture authentic, emotive images of real family connections. No posing necessary. No forced smiles. I believe in surprises, in little messes, in moments when kids think no one is looking.
Perhaps because there's a part of me that still feels like a child, I have a very fun, easy-going personality, and my shoots are playful experiences. Sometimes there are games of hide-and-seek or ice-creams along the river. I only shoot on location in places that hold a special family meaning. Whether it's your home or a favourite park, the places you'll always remember are the most natural settings for your story.
To get the most authentic photographs, I allow the children to dictate the flow of the session. Being a mother, too, I know how important it is to be patient and calm as a newborn is fed and comforted, or as a toddler slowly sheds her camera shyness. Occasionally, I may give some gentle direction to make sure everyone is in the best light, but I am mainly an observer capturing memories as they unfold.
Year after year, clients ask me to document their growing families. Seeing children and their parents blossom over time inspires me. I love that I get to play a part in capturing the magic of childhood and preserving it forever.
